Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy approach designed for young children (ages 2-7) with disruptive and challenging behaviors. In PCIT, the therapist works together with the child and their parent(s) or other caregivers, helping children learn to regulate their emotions and behavior in an age-appropriate way.
PCIT is designed for children whose behaviors fall outside the range of what’s typical for their age, including:
• Aggression
• Anxiety
• Attachment concerns
• Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
• Behavioral concerns related to trauma
• Conduct disorder
• Disruptive, oppositional or defiant behaviors
Families are seen weekly for approximately 14-18 sessions, until parents have mastered the skills and their child’s behavior has improved to a level more typical for their age. They also receive guidance on practicing and using the skills at home and in other settings.
How does PCIT work?
PCIT services are delivered by our intensively trained PCIT therapists in specially designed therapy suites, using state of the art audio technology. During sessions, the therapist actively coaches the parent/caregiver to use effective skills to increase their child’s positive behavior. The parent wears a wireless hearing device while being coached by the therapist who is observing from behind a one-way mirror. This live coaching process is a key feature of PCIT; the parent is able to receive immediate feedback and support as they learn the skills to improve their interaction with their child.
Benefits of PCIT/TCIT
• Strengthen the relationship between parent/caregiver and child
• Reduce disruptive behaviors
• Decrease stressful interactions
• Help the child develop the emotional, social and behavioral skills needed for success
Teacher-Child Interaction Training (TCIT)
TCIT is an adaptation of PCIT for daycare, preschool and early elementary school teachers. Teachers receive training and skills coaching that help them create a positive classroom environment and effectively manage the behavior of all children in the classroom, especially children with extremely challenging behaviors that interfere with learning and social emotional development. The PCIT/ TCIT team at BestSelf Behavioral Health works collaboratively with community partners to provide TCIT training.
